Description

Trace the two-decade struggle to do away with the piston engine from the first proposal to the 50 sleek, Ghia-bodied test cars. See rare footage of their development and testing, and hear incredible stories from the engineers who worked on the project. In one case, the turbine's ability to run on any combustible liquid was tested by filling the tank of one car with Tequila and another with perfume. Both drivers got in and drove away!

This video chronicals Chrysler Corp's ambitious turbine research from its genisis in the early 1950's to its final demise in 1980. Chrysler Turbine Cars were powered by a gas turbine engines manufacturded in-house. Bodies for the Chrysler Turbine were made by Ghia in Turin, Italy, with final assembly taking place in a small plant in Detroit. By the early 1960's Chrysler was ready to prove that there was a market for mass-produced turbine powered cars and commissioned 55 units to be built to loaned out to the general public as a test. While test drivers felt the car had potential, engineers could not make the engine run cleanly enough. Of the total units built (5 prototypes and 50 production cars), most were scrapped at the end of a trial period, with only nine remaining in museums and private collections

Though Chrysler's turbine engine project was terminated in 1980, the Turbine Car was the high point of a three decade project to perfect the engine for practical wide spread use by the gereral public. It's a remarkable look at a revolutionary vehicle that may yet write a new chapter in automotive history. 50 mins run time. Color & black/white
